Craft badge - introduction

 I’ve been crafting for about 40 years - I enjoyed the craft sessions I did in primary school - like the glove puppet (that I still have), the weaving, the towelling beach bag (which I also still have). I started doing some patchwork at around the same time, with hexagons my mum had cut out. I didn’t know any different when I started, so I just started sewing them together in any old way - I didn’t know about putting papers behind them and tacking them…that came a little while later.

Anyway - when I saw the requirements for the Craft badge, I knew I wanted to do it, and would be able to do it fairly easily, especially as at some point I have tried at least 14 out of the 20 crafts listed. I really don’t think I need any more crafting supplies, so my idea is to pick some items from the list, and challenge myself with them. This means that I will be doing some crafts that I already do, but creating a new piece for the badge, or challenging myself to do an aspect of it that I find difficult / more challenging / don’t like.



The ideas I’ve some up with for this: weaving (did a weaving workshop 2 weeks ago, so will finish the piece ready to display), needle felting (making a robin from a kit I got for Christmas a few years ago), tatting (got a kit from my mother-in-law who had been given it by someone else), quilting (try some FMQ quilting designs that I find more tricky - e.g. feathers, paisley, maybe even try some ruler work), appliqué (postcard / fabric picture using a kit I got from a Craft4Crafters show a couple of years ago).

Critic Badge - Review of an album

The album I’ve chosen to review by George Ezra - Staying at Tamara’s. I’m a bit late to the party as far as George Ezra is concerned. I knew that I would enjoy at least one of his songs, as it is one that I heard several times whilst chaperoning our local youth theatre show, and is a song that always makes me feel good - reminding me of happy times and the camaraderie of the group - how it was then (it is just as good now, but different!). The album is in general a feel good album - I’d happily listen to it on car journeys. Certainly the first five songs are quite bouncy - and have what I would call the ‘George Ezra vibe’. The feature that comes through in the first song is that lovely deep round sounding voice - I suppose some people may call it a dark brown chocolate voice. It sounds so rich - and reminds me of Rick Astley’s sound. World Book Day 2025

  The World Book Day badge has a lot of appeal (like all of the monthly badges), and it was a little difficult to try to decide which clauses to do. However, I had to be sensible, and think about what I could realistically manage - and as reading is one of my ‘winding down’ activities at night, I knew I would struggle to get through lots of books.  The first book I read was ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck - a book on the banned reading list. I chose it as it is quite a short book. The language used in it about black people is one of the reasons it is on the banned list. Another reason is the depiction of what George does at the end of the story - which could be argued to be an act of love for his friend - the end result was always going to be the same, but George’s actions were perhaps a kinder way of doing it.  Another clause asked us to read a book which was then made into a film, then watch the film and compare. Critic badge 1 - Dreamboats and Petticoats Bringing On Back The Good Times

 Some of my earliest memories of listening to music are of being in the kitchen while my mum listened to Pick of the Pops (which often had 60’s music on it, being the late 70’s and early 80’s), and to Sounds of the Sixties. I continued to listen to Radio 2  in my teens, 20’s and 30’s - and still listen to it now. With the title including Bringing On Back The Good Times  I knew that this show would have a good selection of music in it.  I went to see the show yesterday afternoon, at Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple (Saturday 9th April 2022). I haven’t seen any of the previous Dreamboats and Petticoats musicals, so didn’t know quite what to expect. We possibly wouldn’t have come to see this show had it not been for the special offer on the tickets; however, an opportunity to see a show when the tickets were £15 each was too good an opportunity to miss.
