Quick update!

Life has been rather busy recently. Firstly, I was asked to quilt a quilt for a sewing friend of mine, and that meant getting to grips (or as I call it - playing) with my new machine! My friend was delighted with the results, and I was also very pleased. Quite a few other people from my group were impressed, and at the time they were suggesting they may be calling on me!

It was good fun to be able to practise this my skills a bit more, and I included some simple ruler work in it this time - using the rulers to create straight lines at a distance from each other - creating channels to do more FMQ work in (FMQ - Free Motion Quilting).

Last week some North Devon Rebels met up, and had a good chat - and we’ve set a date for our next meet up too. I’m counting this as one of my scary things for the Carpe Diem badge, as I find that meeting people I don’t know brings about some anxiety, even when you are looking forward to it, and excited by it.

I’ve been looking at the Rebel Health Check - but I think I’ve completed it - some of the items listed I’ve been doing as part of the Good Habits badge, and I see the optician every year for my contact lenses - a bit more often recently as I’m getting to the age where I need reading glasses….but I’ll write that up in more detail in another blog post.

I’ve tentatively started World Traveller, - and I’m still going with DuoLingo - I’m day 83 now, and this is my third week in the Obsidian League.

I’ve been going swimming every week - Wild Swimming (in the sea, which for me doesn’t seem very wild, as it is something I did regularly when growing up, but hey ho - I’m happy to count it!) - so it looks like I’m doing the Wild Swimming badge. Not sure how good an idea this is for me, as I don’t have a great track record with my feet and swimming…previously when walking / swimming to a small island for a geocache I managed to cut the side of my foot. 10 days ago I went swimming off the slipway - well, we walked off the slipway to find somewhere to put our stuff, and the water was deeper than I thought, and big waves pushed me on to rocks that resulted in a couple of rather bruised toes. If that wasn’t enough, yesterday after swimming we went to have a look in some rock pools, and in doing so (barefoot as the crocs had rubbed my foot the day before), I slipped a little - and somehow bashed my other foot on some rocks - resulting in a fair amount of blood and difficulty walking - can’t really see what I’ve done, but it is possible that I’ve torn the nail off. So currently trying to rest it as much as possible, as I’m going to have to get back to running at some point this week - I’ve signed up to some races (finally) and I need to get some miles in 😁. I think the foot injuries are trying to remind me that I’m not as young as I used to be, and I need to take more care.

On a more positive note - at the weekend I completed my 50th ParkRun! Off to do some more badge work now - back soon!

Critic badge - Review of an Exhibition

Being a quilter I like to go to local quilt exhibitions, as they can provide great inspiration for future projects. In August 2024 Little Stitches held an exhibition at Littleham. The group Little Stitches have been going since 2011; they meet on a Saturday at Littleham Village Hall once a month, and they have had around 50 members. They hold an exhibition fairly regularly, every 2 or 3 years - and I have attended most of them.  I attended the exhibition with the young adult who lives with us, on a Sunday - the exhibition was on for just 2 days. We received a warm welcome as soon as we walked through the door - helped by knowing the member who greeted us! Coming from North Devon and being a part of the quilting community, it is becoming increasingly common to see people I recoggnise. On entering the room where the quilts were exhibited, we came across the raffle. I bought tickets - I wasn’t lucky on this occasion - but never mind, as the money raised went to North Devon Agai...

World Book Day 2025

The World Book Day badge has a lot of appeal (like all of the monthly badges), and it was a little difficult to try to decide which clauses to do. However, I had to be sensible, and think about what I could realistically manage - and as reading is one of my ‘winding down’ activities at night, I knew I would struggle to get through lots of books.  The first book I read was ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck - a book on the banned reading list. I chose it as it is quite a short book. The language used in it about black people is one of the reasons it is on the banned list. Another reason is the depiction of what George does at the end of the story - which could be argued to be an act of love for his friend - the end result was always going to be the same, but George’s actions were perhaps a kinder way of doing it.  Another clause asked us to read a book which was then made into a film, then watch the film and compare. I chose to read ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ by Joh...

Critic Badge - Review of an album

The album I’ve chosen to review by George Ezra - Staying at Tamara’s. I’m a bit late to the party as far as George Ezra is concerned. I knew that I would enjoy at least one of his songs, as it is one that I heard several times whilst chaperoning our local youth theatre show, and is a song that always makes me feel good - reminding me of happy times and the camaraderie of the group - how it was then (it is just as good now, but different!). The album is in general a feel good album - I’d happily listen to it on car journeys. Certainly the first five songs are quite bouncy - and have what I would call the ‘George Ezra vibe’. The feature that comes through in the first song is that lovely deep round sounding voice - I suppose some people may call it a dark brown chocolate voice. It sounds so rich - and reminds me of Rick Astley’s sound. Although the first five songs sound bouncy, there are some darker undertones - talk of anxiety, certain words that prompt some deeper thinking. It surpris...
